The summer pin-doll swap was a lot of fun!  The theme was In The Garden and the pins that were created and sent on that subject were colourful and full of charm. Pin-dolls are wearable art dolls of 5 inches or less with a pin fastener sewn to the back.

The glorious count of 24 members registered this summer and it was with every pleasure that I sent word games, welcome letters and a garden story magazine to each of those registrants. 19 parcels of pins were delivered to my house; mostly around the “send by” date of August 14th, but with some arriving as early as June! It is grand to be the “swap” house, I tell you.

When the count was in we swapped 41 garden oriented pin-dolls.  There were sunny faces, frantic haired fairies, adorable pea pod babies, a “dandy” lion, plant chewing cats, cockleshell maidens, smiling flowers, an octopus’ garden sea nymph, a garden of “weedin” woman, and more ribbons, beads, buttons and tissue than you could shake a shovel at!  There were pin-dolls made of felt, poly-resin clay, cotton, and hand manufactured fabrics.  Dolls came packaged in plastic “suitcases”, seed packages, calendar pages, eyelet paper, and gorgeous print boxes.  They came by postal carrier, UPS, and Courier.  I was beginning to scan the skies for Owls with packages.  Harry Potter might not be the only one to receive mail that way!

By mid September I had the pin-dolls rewrapped ready to go to their new homes.  19 gaily wrapped parcels make a cumbersome tower, but not to be discouraged, I took them to the post office in three trips.  The local post office goes into meter shock if I show up with that many boxes and padded mailers jammed into my very large tote bag. It’s more like Santa Claus’ sack!

Some members were brand new to a pin-doll swap this time. Some members are forever faithful to the game and send a swap or two every time.  For members who have never participated in a “not at the conference” pin-doll swap; why not try it this winter? -- Deborah Downey
