Friday - Saturday, May 11-12 - 9:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Students created a finished, 14 inch fabric doll complete with armature, base, face mask and hair. Techniques taught included free motion machine embroidery over layers of fabric to make the body fabric and hair. Students learned embellishment techniques using beads and sequins. They cut up their own fabrics and arranged them on a base fabric to machine embroider, creating a one-of-a-kind fabric. Basic doll-making techniques were used to cut, sew and stuff the body. Armature wire was inserted to pose and stand the doll on a base. The dolls came to life with apparent animation and movement. Hair was made by embroidering fibers over sheer fabrics using a dissolvable stabilizer. Students were given a paper clay mask to paint. An all over bead embroidery technique was taught to add sparkle and pizzazz to the finished doll.

Arley Berryhill comes to doll making from studies in fashion history, design, costume and make-up, and a career in costuming and theatre. He has won several awards and has been published in magazines including Art Doll Quarterly. His beaded pieces have been shown in Seattle's art galleries. Arley lives in Las Vegas and works making and maintaining costumes for hotel shows. He takes great pleasure in teaching doll making and embellishment techniques.
